Portfolio - Family Space

The brief for this garden in Guildford was to create a visually stunning garden that catered for the clients entertaining needs of today, whilst giving them maximum usable space for the future.

We used a mixture of IPE hardwood decking and smooth sandstone to minimise ongoing maintenance.

As an entertaining space, lighting was critical and the subtle LED lighting around the deck helps to define different levels & areas.

The lighting theme was also carried through to the swimming pool and hot tub we installed, with each circuit separately switched for maximum flexibility.

We were asked to find a way of making this seemingly small (before we got started) garden in Woking useable for both our clients entertaining requirements AND still provide a flat area for their young sons to play football.

The use of new railway sleepers for retaining walls delivers a much softer feel to the walling than we would have achieved with brick or block.

LED lighting provides gentle uplighting of the walls at night.

Like many of our family gardens, it was essential to provide for both the adults and the children in this large Guildford garden.

Initially, a sloping, rubble strewn former building site from our clients extension, we created two levels with the simple rendered blockwork wall, with an extensive play area out of site from the main garden.

The bark mulch covering the play area ensures a soft landing whilst providing an aesthetically appealing way of keeping weeds from creeping though.

A layer of geotextile beneath the mulch prevents weeds by eliminating light but still allowing water to flow through.

The adult area close to the house is a large patio of natural black sandstone bordered with smooth black pebbles providing both a pleasing look and a practical way of draining water from the patio.
